Climbing Holidays
The most resourceful and large place for Rock climbing in Bulgaria is the Vratsa area - called "Vratzata". It is situated in the western part of Stara Planina mountain and it is part of the national park Vrachanski Balkan.
The area is easily accesible from Vratsa (5 mins by car or bus), only one and a half hour drive from Sofia airport. The limestone of the Vratsa Central wall and rock pillars offer infinite possibilities for the climbers. As a whole the area resembles the area of Verdon in France. From one side there is a lot of place for free climbing on to already equipped routes, and on the other hand there is a plenty of room for making new exquisite and free climbing routes.
The most interesting and challenging is The Central Wall. It is about 450m high and it is almost vertical.
There are more than 120 routes on about 10 different wallsand crags ranging from 1 to 13 rope lengths. The difficulty grade is III-VIII UIAA with some aid passages. There are also routes of higher difficulties.
The crags: The area can be divided in 5 main regions. The highest and most imposant one is the Central Wall. Starting immediately from the road are the rocks of Vratzata Gorge (The Door), with excellent routes up to 200 meters. Lower Central area, including 5 different crags about 100m high.
Recently a new climbing area was open.It is called "the new object". It is near by the "Vratzata". "The new object" is purely for free climbing, it is overhanging and is something as prelude to a cave entrance, which is very useful when the weather is rainy.
The view is marvellous, which added to everything else makes the experience of being there a thankful luck.
